The Race for Race

With the Politics of this election aside, what will we remember about this election for years to come?

Will we remember things like Bill Ayres, Rev. Wright, Palin, Kahlidi, or any other of the controversial subjects that have been brought up by either side?

In my own lifetime I have known people that have been discriminated against for nothing other than their race. Think about that, how much this country has evolved but there is still a line between what people can do and accomplish based on their Race. This line isn’t something that you can reach out and touch nor is it a line that you can tell a friend where it is so that they can go there and see it for themselves.

When living in Germany, one of the first people that I met in school (1st grade) had very few friends, it wasn’t because he was a mean kid, it was because of the fact that his Father was black and his Mother was white. I can remember him saying “are you sure you want to be my friend.” At the time I really didn’t understand why he would ask me if I wanted to be his friend just because of his family. That was foreign to me, when I was living in a country that I was completely out of place.

In the last 60 years, we, as a country, have seen so many debates and controversies based on nothing but Race. We have gone from a nation that if you were not white, you couldn’t vote, eat at the restaurant of your choice, have the job that you want, to go to college, or serve in the military in the job that you choose. Fast forward to 2008 and all of those things have changed however there is still a line, a line that isn’t talked about at your dinner parties or in the break room while taking 10 minutes to have a coffee at work.

There are still people who think that there is still racism in the south and that it where it is only. Well let me tell you I have lived in the Deep South twice and I have lived in upstate NY, and it is present all over.

In a previous post I said that my age group of citizens don’t care about having a black candidate let alone a black president due to the fact that we (the 20-30 something’s) have grown up with black Doctors, Lawyers, Senators, Congressmen and so on and so forth. But form recent conversations with people there are many, surprisingly, who do care.

What will this election mean for the future of our country? Will we remember about all those things that I listed at the beginning of this post? Or will we remember that there was one man that stepped into the race and ran full speed ahead to the point that he was either elected President, or almost elected President depending on what happens today.

No matter what happens I wonder what the history books will say about this year. And If Obama wins where will that line be pushed to, will it even exist anymore?

I don’t know the answer to that, only time will tell but I can’t wait to see what happens.
